Also needed are Sentinel LS feed, which can be purchased from Holdren’s Country Store in Vinton, bagged bedding, alfalfa cubes and rice bran. Also protein bars and protein powder for shakes (these will help build muscle) and Gatorade drinks. Please contact the horse rescue at (540) 721-1910 or email info@rvhr.com.

HARDY, Va.—

A horse from Franklin County is getting a new shot at life thanks to a rescue group. The Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue is trying to nurse Shotgun back to health. The nearly year old Quarter Horse colt weighs under 280 pounds. Horses should weigh twice that much at his age. Franklin County Animal Control officers found him in a trailer Tuesday night. He can barely stand.

The rescue group says they will do whatever it takes to give Shotgun a better life. “We will keep him until he is healthy and ready to find a good loving home for him. As long as it takes,” Kathryn Barber of Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue said. The Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue needs donations for Shotgun’s medical bills. Anyone who donates will get a web link to a live camera so they can see how the horse is doing. Shotgun also needs things like protein bars and powders to build up muscle, and Gatorade drinks. Last night at 11:15pm, April 30th, 2013, Franklin County Animal Control officers arrived at our facility with trailer in tow.  Inside, lying on the trailer floor was a very small, emaciated colt. He was released to RVHR’s care in the hopes that he would have a chance to overcome the starvation and neglect that has reduced him to 246 lbs. He is barely able to stand and we are working very hard to give him every chance for survival. His name is Shotgun, he is a 10 to 12 month old Quarter Horse colt.RVHR is in need of everyone’s help to save this little guy’s life.  If you would like to help by donating the following items, please let us know:Most importantly is monetary donations to help cover his upcoming veterinarian bills.  Our veterinarian bill of $ 3,350.00 is still due from our last few starvation cases that began in January of this year.Items we are in need of for Shotgun are;Sentinel LS feed which can be purchased from Holdren’s Country Store in Vinton, Va., 540-344-6053, bagged bedding, alfalfa cubes and rice bran – also at Holdren’s;Protein bars and Protein powder for shakes (these will help build muscle) and Gatorade drinks which can be purchased at most grocery stores.Thank you for all your support of RVHR and the work we do to save those horses in need.
